The Anesthesia Record

I remember the Winston-Salem apartment-hunting process to be rather taxing.  My three main requirements included:
1. Close proximity to the hospital to limit my commute time
2. Quiet neighbors since I prefer to study at home
3. A safe neighborhood - a must given that I am a female and would be leaving my house before 5am most mornings.

After weeks of scouring online advertisements, I found a great basement apartment that fits my requirements perfectly.  If you are an incoming student relocating to the Winston-Salem area, I would highly recommend looking at the Wake Forest University School of Medicine website for a list of available housing options in the area.  (Click here for the housing page.)

I asked my classmates if they had any advice to offer on the matter.  Here's what a few said:

ARDMORE
Dave, who lives in the Ardmore Area of town (the area of town bordering Baptist Hospital to the south) suggested driving around the Winston-Salem if you are able. There are so many for rent by owner places not listed online that you can get for a  for a very reasonable price.  (Just so you know, Ardmore is a really quaint area filled with lots of small, older homes with lots of character.  They would be great for a 2-4 person household.)  Dave also suggested that this trip be taken sooner rather than later. This town is geared around med student "match" day and most of the best options are made available around that time (which recently passed).

REGENT'S VILLAGE
Three of my classmates, Jaime and Laura and Jim, live in a community called Regent's Village (listing here).  Jaime said "I know that Laura, Jim, and I have all been happy living here at Regent's Village.  Last year they gave us $250 off the first month for being Baptist employees.  The location is awesome, same with freeway access.  We only signed a 7 month lease and when we went to resign they gave $500 off for signing a 12 month contract.  Jim signed two years up front and didn't get this offered to him obviously so just a little money saving tip!  (Editor's note to Jim: SUCKA!)  Also, the online rates were higher than when I called and asked about specials."  Laura noted that, while it is a bit pricier than some other options in the area, it's a safe, gated community and they ran a great deal over the summer where a two bedroom was cheaper than a comparable one bedroom.  Laura lives in a two bedroom house with a garage, yard, gas fireplace, and large closets and pays $900/month.  This includes lawn care an access to the pool and small gym.  She mentioned that she uses the extra room as an office and really appreciates having an separate study and living space

BROOKBERRY PARK APARTMENTS
Two of my classmates live in Brookberry Park Apartments and both seem pleased (property website here).  They would recommend living here.  They are also slackers and that's all the information I could squeeze out of them.

THE NISSEN BUILDING
My classmate, Anne, moved here from Chicago without an opportunity to scout out some apartments beforehand.  So, to be safe she signed a lease for an apartment in The Nissen Building, which is fairly new and really beautiful (property website here).  Anne has been really pleased with her decision, stating, "It's a little pricey, but it's fun being downtown and a short walk from the gym, restaurants and nightlife. I'd recommend it if you're willing to pay a little more than the surrounding apartments."

So there you have it folks.  Of course, there are a multitude of other options available that are not listed here, but I hope this small smattering of tried and tested locales helps to point you in the right direction as you search for a new place to call home!
